Hi,

Ireland will be my future land so i decided to help people out-there.

When i was mapping some hedges, which is my specialities, i discover some strange rings, everywhere in the irish country-side. I supposed it’s fortification, so i done some research and found this, in Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ringfort

In the article this sentence attracked me : “In Ireland, over 40,000 sites have been identified as ringforts and it is thought that at least 50,000 ringforts existed on the island”.

WHAT ??!!

It could be quite common for you guys, Irish women and men, but i have decided to help you to map this historical heritage. I think you’ll need some extra help to mapp all these historical sites.

See you

Yes, these are very interesting land features. Ringforts in Northern Europe, gords in Slavic countries… If you know of some, start mapping them!

I can see you started mapping the ringforts with just those tags: area=yes historic=yes

The more suitable tagging is: historic=archaeological_site site_type=fortification fortification_type=hill_fort

Just like this one :)

You may wish to check out the twitter account @everyringfort: they are tweeting all of them from official records. Sacly quite a few have been lost to the plough since the GSGS 3906 maps (available in editors) were compiled.

Don’t confuse hill_fort and ringfort. Ireland mostly has the later.

We have a few more subtags, but they aren’t very standardized yet (check taginfo) and some are quite technical.

You might also want to check our resident archaeological expert’s youtube videos which have interesting Ireland-specific info about tagging and sources.
